Why #BinderOfWomen Was more Than a Slip

It seemed a simple slip of the tongue when Mitt Romney responded to a question about equal pay for women by speaking about the “binders of women” he asked his staff to bring to him as he tried to increase the number of women in his workforce.

If it was a slip, it was a revealing one.

And it was revealing for two reasons, one that will alienate progressives, the other that will alienate conservatives.

First, the comment demonstrates that Romney thinks of the issue of equal pay for women in business rather than human terms. Women are things that can be placed into binders and pored over among men in the boardroom. This will alienate progressives.

Second, the answer illustrated that Romney’s approach to the global problem of equal pay for women is to engage in what many would consider affirmative action. This will alienate conservatives.

In general, though, and most importantly, the comment, and now the meme, will alienate women of all kinds.

And it should alienate men too.
